Scots Baker creates realistic cakes that look like other foods including ramen, pancakes and burgers

A talented baker has revealed the amazing realistic illusion cakes she make that people often mistake for other things.

Lynne Davidson, 36, from Glenrothes, Scotland, bakes cake and sculpts them to look like other foods with recent creations including pizza, ramen, and even chicken wings. 

The amazing illusion cakes usually take her a day and a half to complete with her charging £150 for each one.

‘When I first started I really took risks and tried to push myself a lot.

‘I didn’t really see the point in doing it if I was just going to be a generic cake decorator like everybody else, that’s not really my style.

‘I’ve had every disaster that you can have by taking those risks, but that’s how you learn.

‘I absolutely love what I do, even though when I finish a cake all I can see if where I need to improve!’

Lynne has been running her business, Lynne’s Cake Emporium, for nine years now.

‘I’ve always loved shows like Ace of Cakes, that was the main one for me, especially when I was younger,’ she explained. 

‘When I saw that people were decorating cakes for a living, I thought that’s what I want to do.

‘Before I was writing I was drawing, so I’ve always loved art and being creative.

‘When I was little me and my mum always baked, so I’ve always known how to bake and done that as a hobby.

‘Cake decorating is just a natural progression from those two.’

Lynne usually spends a day and a half on an illusion cake.

She said: ‘When I first started it was much longer hours, I would be spending two 12 hour days making them.

‘Now that I’ve had a bit of practice it’s down to a day and a half on average.

‘Obviously each cake is different, some have more fiddle-y bits that take longer.’

Lynne usually uses a ganache or buttercream filling for the cakes.

She said: ‘I cover it in ganache or buttercream and then it’s a case of bringing it to life with bonding, modelling chocolate.

‘Usually the cake itself is vanilla because there’s loads of flavours in the decoration, unless the customer asks for something different.

‘If I’m making something that needs to have a liquid effect I use stuff called piping gel to create that.

‘With fiddle-y stuff like the spring onion on the ramen, I made that by hand and airbrush the colour onto the fondant.’

Lynne revealed that there is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into her cakes.

She said: ‘Every cake is completely different, they’re all unique.

Lynne said: 'Usually I bake the cake the day before, because if you do it on the same day then the sponge is too soft to carve, but you don't want it to be dry'

‘There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that I think people don’t realise, especially because most of the cakes have something to look like it’s floating above it.

‘The one that took the longest was probably the ramen, because it had sesame seeds that I have to make.

‘It was the same with the curry one because I was making each grain individually, I’m cross-eyed by the end of the day!’
