Beef and onion Findus-style Crispy Pancakes return to supermarket freezers

Just in time for Shrove Tuesday! Fans rejoice as beef and onion Crispy Pancakes return to supermarket freezers after a four-year hiatus

  • Findus-style beef and onion Crispy Pancakes are being relaunched by Birds Eye
  • The frozen foods company brought other flavours of the product back last year
  • Crispy Pancakes, which were first created in 1958, were discontinued in 2016

Findus-style beef and onion crispy pancakes will make a long-awaited return just in time for Pancake Day tomorrow.

The microwavable parcels, filled with minced beef and coated with golden syrup crumbs, will be available in the freezers of ASDA from February 25.

Birds Eye, who, along with Findus, are owned by the Iglo Group, have brought the flavour back after it was discontinued in 2016.

While the snack made a return last year with new fillings – including mozzarella, mozzarella and tomato and ham and cheese – fans were disappointed to find the beef version was still unavailable.

Anne-Marie Gayer, Senior Brand Manager at Birds Eye, said: ‘Judging by the response to the re-launch last year, Crispy Pancakes are as popular now as they were during the 70s, 80s and even early 90s.

‘We received an overwhelming demand from shoppers to bring back the Beef & Onion flavour, so we have spent months improving the recipe, using premium ingredients for the coating and filling.

‘We hope shoppers young and old can enjoy the delicious flavour of our Crispy Pancakes.’

Fans took to Twitter to celebrate the return as one penned: ‘Did I hear right @BirdsEyeUK are bringing back beef and onion Findus-style crispy pancakes.’

The beef crispy pancakes, which first arrived in supermarket freezers in 1958, can now be bought in four-packs for £1.95.

Changes have been made to the recipe, as the calorie count of a single parcel has risen from 89 calories to a whopping 181.

But the salt and sugar contents have dropped; from 1g to 0.48g and 6.9g to 2g respectively.

Other changes include the serving size – which used to be two pancakes – being cut down to one.

And the cooking time is now down to 10 minutes, from 12-15 minutes before.

People were so upset when the crispy pancakes were first discontinued in 2016 they took to Twitter in their droves.

One said: ‘Dad just had a break down when I told him the news that crispy pancakes have been discontinued.’

Another added: ‘#findus have discontinued their crispy pancakes. Another bygone for parents to talk about to their children.’

One added: ‘What a day to find out the Findus Crispy pancakes to be discontinued! I’m devastated! I’m off to stock up!’
