Ralph Lauren calls off April fashion show in NYC ‘as a precautionary measure’ amid ongoing coronavirus outbreak

Ralph Lauren has canceled a fashion show slated to be held in New York in April amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

‘In light of the ongoing uncertainties related to the novel coronavirus around the world, we have decided to cancel our fall 2020 show as a precautionary measure and out of respect for our teams, partners and consumers,’ a spokesman for the fashion icon told Women’s Wear Daily on Wednesday. ‘Our primary focus remains on their health and safety.’

The show was slated to showcase wares from Lauren’s fall 2020 collection after he didn’t have an event during New York Fashion Week last month.

Other fashion mainstays that have altered their immediate schedules include Gucci, which has called off its May 18 Cruise 2021 show in San Francisco show; Prada, which has postponed a May 21 Cruise show in Tokyo; and other shows slated in the Italian locales of Milan and Bologna; and in Geneva, Switzerland.

Paris Fashion Week shows for six prominent China designers – Shiatzy Chen, Calvin Luo, Masha Ma, Maison Mai and Uma Wang, Jarel Zhang – were also canceled amid the outbreak, Reuters reported Friday.

The announcement came Wednesday as New York health officials dealt with 11 people testing positive for the virus in New Rochelle (which is about 25 miles north of New York City) after coming into contact with an attorney who was diagnosed with COVID-19, and subsequently hospitalized in Manhattan.

Hundreds of people have been quarantined as result of the local outbreak, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
