Could the iPhone SE launch this week? Case for a ‘New iPhone 4.7-inch, 2020’ is spotted at Best Buy despite retailers being instructed not to sell them before April 5

  • Apple is set to release an iPhone SE that is similar in design to the iPhone 8
  • The smartphone was said to be released sometime in the first quarter of 2020
  • Now, a smartphone case was spotted at a Best Buy that could be for the handset
  • The packaging reads it is for the ‘New iPhone 4.7-inch 2020’
  • Retailers were instructed not to put the cases on the shelves until April 5
  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

Apple is set to release an iPhone SE this year, but many questioned the timeline after the tech giant was forced to shutdown its assembly factories in China due to the coronavirus.

However, a new image has surfaced online that suggests the firm is on track for its first quarter launch date and could roll out the smartphone in the next week.

A consumer shared a pictured of an Urban Armor Gear case at a Best Buy location, with packaging that indicates it is for the ‘New iPhone 4.7-inch 2020’.

According to the report from 9to5Mac, retailers have been instructed not to sell the case until Sunday, April 5, suggesting that is when the iPhone 9, or iPhone SE, will officially launch.

The new handset is expected to be 4.7 inches, include Touch ID and boast a similar design to that of the iPhone 8.

Rumors about the smartphone first surfaced last year, when Apple was reportedly working on an iPhone that is cheaper and resembles the iPhone 8, but still includes the power of the iPhone 11.

In the report from October 2019, 9to5Mac claimed that the ‘spiritual iPhone SE successor’ would have a 4.7-inch screen, Finger ID and be available in ‘the first quarter of 2020’.

And it seems Apple could still be on schedule regardless of having to shutdown its iPhone assembly plants in China last month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, 9to5Mac recently noted: ‘It’s unlikely that April 5 will be the release date for the iPhone 9, but one possibility is that Apple announces the iPhone 9 this week with availability sometime next week.’

The red Urban Armor Gear case has what appears to be a metal exoskeleton or frame that provides rigidity and protection to the leather case.

There is a camera cutout on the top right and the packaging for the case has text saying it is for the ‘New iPhone 4.7-inch 2020.’

Rumors have suggested that the iPhone will be designed with an A13 processor and 3 GB RAM.

The smartphone is also believed to look more like the iPhone 8, which has the finger ID and smaller display.

At first glance the biggest difference between the iPhone SE 2 and iPhone 8 will be the frosted glass back like the iPhone 11 Pro rather than the glossy glass of the iPhone 8, according to iGeeksBlog.

iPhone 8 was the last to launch with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner built in, replaced with face-scanning sensors.
