Sir Kenny Dalglish paid a glowing tribute to the NHS staff who looked after him as he was released from hospital following his positive test for Coronavirus.

The Liverpool, Celtic and Scotland legend was admitted to Southport and Ormskirk General last Wednesday after feeling unwell with a separate condition.

He was diagnosed with having gallstones but was subsequently tested for COVID-19, as a matter of course.

Dalglish had voluntarily self-isolated for a fortnight before going to hospital but the results showed he had contracted the virus. The 69-year-old was asymptomatic but he remained in hospital, where he was monitored, until Saturday lunchtime.

He has now begin another period of self-isolation at home but Dalglish – Liverpool’s greatest player and arguably the biggest figure in the club’s history – was eager to commend the tireless work being done by doctors and nurses to tackle the pandemic.

‘They were absolutely brilliant,’ said Dalglish. ‘As a nation, we are very lucky to have them. I wish them well as they continue to work.

‘It’s never easy being in hospital but when you are in the care of our NHS staff then it is wholly comforting. You know you are in good hands.’

Liverpool released a statement on Friday evening about the development and, inevitably, it led to a deluge of well-wishes for a man who won every domestic honour at Anfield as a player then manager. He also won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995.

Writing in his weekly column for The Sunday Post, Dalglish added: ‘I am not one for making a fuss – especially in the current climate. But I knew something wasn’t right. So I went to hospital to get it checked out. Turns out I had gallstones.

‘When I arrived at hospital, I was also swabbed for coronavirus. The result came back positive. I had been self-isolating in the house for a few weeks, so I am honestly not sure how I got it. I am resting but I am feeling fine, thankfully.

‘People may think the Dalglish name got me in and got me the best of care. Not so. I was looked after because the NHS staff treat everyone the same.

‘The Dalglish family has always had the utmost respect for the NHS. Being a patient in hospital these last few days has only reinforced our view.’
