A woman who thought her £1 bunch of daffodils was missing from her online shop was baffled when the flowers eventually turned up in her fridge three days later.

Helen Newman, 38, who lives in Newcastle, was left confused when she couldn’t find the flowers that she had ordered from ASDA last Thursday.

Searching throughout her home, she complained and received a refund for the item – before discovering the daffodils had arrived but were being kept in a very unusual place.

Helen’s helpful husband, Dave had unpacked the shopping and put the flowers in the fridge after mistaking them for spring onions.

The daffodils had been in the fridge for three whole days before Dave discovered them lying among the vegetables on Saturday evening and presented the very chilled bunch to his wife.

Determined to give the flowers a chance, Helen put them in water and was thrilled when they still bloomed beautifully after their cold adventure.

Helen who runs a lifestyle blog, racked up over 5,000 re-tweets after sharing the funny story on her Twitter page.

Explaining the situation, she wrote: ‘Funny story. I ordered some daffs from Asda this week which didn’t turn up so I complained and got a refund.

‘Turns out Dave thought they were spring onions and they’ve been in the fridge for the last three days.’

One person said: ‘As a greengrocer, I can confirm this happens on a very regular basis.’

Another person responded to the tweet, recalling when they had done the same thing and found the daffodils with the spring onions in their fridge – two whole weeks later.

‘Ha! My husband did the exact same but he thought they were celery!,’ another said.

A fourth added: ‘I asked my husband to help me look for yellow onions in the supermarket. He came back, proudly bearing a bag of yellow daffodil bulbs. I didn’t make soup out of them.’
