Would-be racegoers celebrated the Grand National Ladies Day in style from the comfort of their own homes today, as Aintree remains closed to visitors due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Revellers dressed to the nines to mark the second day of the festival – usually one of the most popular racedays in the calendar – and posed for photos in their gardens and various rooms of their houses.

Many sported glamorous summer dresses and slinky jumpsuits, while others went all out and incorporated an elaborate headpiece as they kicked off the weekend early.

One fan shared a snap of her tucking into a glass of fizz before midday, while another sported a VERY patriotic ensemble, fashioning a gown out of a Union Jack flag.

Taking selfies in bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms, the would-be attendees showed off their finest outfits online – which included feathered hats and stylish coats.

The would-be Ladies Day attendees have been encouraged to don their Sunday best and submit pictures of their outfits for consideration in its best-dressed awards on Facebook, using the hashtag #AGrandDayIn.

The winner will be given a £4,000 donation to their chosen charity, Randox Everyman or Everywoman health package worth £500, two tickets & hospitality at next year’s Randox Ladies Day, £200 betting vouchers for your day’s racing and a bottle of champagne.

And ladies from across the country have given judges a tricky job as they swapped cosy slippers and lockdown loungewear for precarious heels, statement hats and dramatic dresses.

The feature race is the Grade One JLT Chase (known traditionally as the Melling Chase), which usually features stars from the previous month’s Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Both the Betway Mildmay Novices’ Chase and the Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle bring together potential stars of the future, while the Randox Topham Chase is one of the most competitive and popular events of the meeting.

The second race of the week to be run over the Grand National fences, the Topham features horses with a love for the iconic and unique obstacles, but perhaps not quite the stamina for Saturday’s feature contest.

Last year’s Cheltenham Festival was the last major UK sporting event to be staged just ten days before the UK went into lockdown, and attracted controversy over claims it acted as a super-spreader of the virus.
