BIG, BOLD LOAFERS

Look , I didn’t think the chunky loafer was a trend I’d be following either. If I’m honest, I’d sneered at those who, sensibly as it turns out, started wearing them last year. Such massive shoes may feel too bold — but now that we’re wearing fewer heels, it’s become an obvious choice. After all, they’re the perfect mix of comfort and daring style statement.

A LITTLE LIFT

Think of this look as next season’s answer to the current chunky boot. They’re flat but add an extra inch-or-so to your height and, ankle-wise, I did enjoy the slimming effect of half a tonne of black leather loafer attached to my feet. Yes, bigger is better.

DESIGNER DOUBLES

If money is no object, go straight for Gucci’s horsebit detail platforms. But at £765 for a trend that may not be around for ever, you’d be better off with one of the clever high street doubles below.

SIMPLE STYLING

Best of all, they go with everything — especially this season’s tricky wide-legged trousers. You can also wear yours with skirts or dresses and black opaque tights. Or you could try tapered splithem trousers like the ones I’m wearing here, which will really show off the shoes. You can resist but, trust me, it’s futile; it’s only a matter of time before you’re wearing a pair.
