Scott Morrison faces backlash as areas ravaged by floods are SNUBBED from disaster relief payments: ‘We desperately need help’

  • Scott Morrison was slammed for excluding flood-affected towns from payments
  • Labor MP Justine Elliot lambasted the Prime Minister and his government
  • Mr Morrison left out towns in her electorate from accessing disaster payments

Scott Morrison has been slammed once again for his response to the floods after excluding residents in the flood-affected areas of Ballina, Byron Bay and the Tweed Shire from accessing disaster relief payments.

The Prime Minister, who was visiting northern NSW on Wednesday, announced relief for those living in Richmond Valley, Lismore and Clarence Valley – with adults being eligible for two $1,000 payments and children $400.

Labor MP Justine Elliot lambasted Mr Morrison for ruling out areas in her electorate of Richmond, which includes Ballina, Byron and the Tweed Shire, from receiving payments.

Ms Elliot took to Twitter to vent over the exclusion before criticising both the federal and state governments.

‘JUST IN: Scott Morrison has announced that Ballina, Byron and Tweed Shire residents will NOT be able to access the federal government’s additional disaster payments,’ she wrote.

‘This is an outrage and I am calling for this to be extended to ALL of us.’

In an earlier tweet, she revealed that the prime minister was not visiting her electorate during his trip to northern NSW because he ‘doesn’t care and he has failed us’.

Ms Elliot later shared a video online where she appeared visibly frustrated as she continued to slam Mr Morrison.

‘I’m so furious, I’ve just found out Scott Morrison has deliberately excluded the people of Tweed, Byron and Ballina from getting more disaster relief payments, yet other regions have got it.’

‘We’ve got people here now who have no homes, they have no food, they have no money. We desperately need assistance right here. We need Scott Morrison and the New South Wales premier to start acting and help our region,’ she added.

In the caption for the clip, the Labor politician labels the federal government and the NSW government a ‘disgrace’ for their poor response.

Thousands of residents at Ballina were forced to evacuate their home during the chaos.

Several had to be rescued by helicopters from their rooftops as floodwaters closed in and isolated sections of the coastal town.

At one point, an entire hospital in the area was forced to evacuate all patients and staff to a nearby high school.
