How to make the perfect barista-style coffee at home EVERY time – and the one major cup mistake thousands make

  • A coffee expert has revealed his secrets to making the perfect cup of coffee
  • Mitch Monaghan, 34, said it all boils down to a few key factors
  • The milk, coffee, coffee machine and temperature of the cup play vital roles
  • Luckily making a perfect cup of coffee at home every time is easy to master
  • Using a milk frother is also ideal for beginners

The secrets to making the perfect cup of barista-made coffee at home have been revealed – and the temperature of the coffee cup is key to a tasty beverage.

Sydney’s Nespresso coffee ambassador Mitch Monaghan, 34, told FEMAIL there’s a specific formula involving a few simple steps anyone can master: the milk of choice, the coffee itself, the machine and the temperature of the cup.

Firstly, Mitch said to ensure the cup is heated before using to ensure the temperature of the coffee doesn’t drop quickly; this should be done every time.

Sydney’s Nespresso coffee ambassador Mitch Monaghan, 34, (pictured) told Daily Mail Australia there’s a specific formula involving a few simple steps anyone can master

‘On average, a cold cup can steal up to 20 per cent of your coffees temperature so it pays to heat your cup before you use it,’ he said.

‘Fill the cup with hot water to preheat. It’s a simple step that many people miss but you’ll notice the difference in coffee quality and the brew will stay warmer for longer.’

When frothing milk, Mitch said whole or semi-skimmed milk will froth better compared to plant-based milk.

‘Whole milk allows you to create a full and thick foam while skimmed milk will deliver foam with larger bubbles,’ he said.

‘Using a milk frother is the easiest way to easily achieve perfectly frothed milk – the Nespresso Aeroccino3 Milk Frother and Barista Milk Frother are great options, especially when starting out.’

It’s also important to carefully pour your milk into the cup on a slight angle at a slow rate to add the perfect amount of foam on top.

‘Pour the milk low and slow into the cup, lifting slowly as you finish. Patience in pouring is key here as it gives you a silky, blended coffee,’ he said.

How to make the perfect cup of coffee at home:

1. Know the different ratios to milk and espresso – for instance a cappuccino should be made up of three equal parts (1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foamed milk) while a flat white is simply coffee and milk

2. Fill the cup with hot water to preheat – the cup should never be room temperature

3. Use a milk frother to froth milk easily

4. Pour the milk low and slow into the cup, lifting slowly as you finish

5. Select a higher intensity capsule for milk coffees

6. Give the milk carton a good shake before you get started if using plant-based milk

Those who enjoy a café cappuccino can replicate the taste by understanding the three equal parts it consists of – 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foamed milk.

‘A delicious cappuccino all comes down to the perfect balance of the intense coffee flavour and velvety frothy milk,’ Mitch said.

‘To achieve that intense flavour, I’d always recommend a darker roasted blend for your cappuccino – my go-to picks for a great cappuccino are Arpeggio from our Original system and Double Espresso Chiaro from our Vertuo system.’

To compare, a flat white is simply a combination of espresso and milk, with no milk needing to be frothed.

Mitch said those who enjoy a flat white as well as a strong cup of coffee, reach out for a double espresso to ‘bring the coffee and milk ratio into balance’.
